Here's the bit that shocks most people today. We think elections are democratic. In the ancient world, elections were the elitist tool. Elections were a way of giving "superior" people a greater chance to rule. The democratic tool was the lottery — random chance, because chance treats everyone the same.

So: lottery = democratic. Election = aristocratic. It's almost exactly the opposite of how we think today.
